A Message from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
On behalf of the Government of Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is responsible for federal co-operative housing programs and policies.
Under an agreement signed with CMHC in 2005, the Agency for Co-operative Housing is providing certain services to housing co-operatives funded under federal programs in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Prince Edward Island. The Agency helps safeguard the public investment in co-operative housing and contributes to the long-term viability of the portfolio it manages for CMHC.
As part of the service agreement with CMHC, the Agency provides information to co-operatives, assesses risks and takes action to mitigate them, and monitors and seeks compliance with operating agreements. CMHC continues to be responsible for federal co-operative housing programs and policies on behalf of the federal government in addition to providing federal assistance.
CMHC helps Canadians meet their housing needs. As Canada’s authority on housing, CMHC contributes to the stability of the housing market and financial system, provides support for Canadians in housing need, and offers objective housing research and advice to Canadian governments, consumers and the housing industry. Prudent risk management, strong corporate governance and transparency are cornerstones of its operations.
